“Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end up really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.”
– Mahatma Gandhi

This quote is pretty powerful to the soul. I have had many opportunities to give up on myself or to think I am not capable of doing something, like I am sure many of you have as well. Throughout my life, I have been told “you will never make in through nursing school,” “you’re stupid,” or “you can’t write a book”. If I had listened to other people’s assertions and not believed in myself, then I would not be who I am today. When we are faced with untruths about ourselves, we have two ways we can go. One, believe what they say and never amount to what we’re capable of, or two, take those words to light a fire inside and prove that dreams can become reality.

I graduated from nursing school with an A average, an average I never earned in my grade school years. I am also living each and everyday with the challenge of the heart condition and adrenal disease, as I have to pick myself up everyday and live life to the fullest. I also just published my very first cookbook. I had times of believing that all things were impossible for me. I would think, “I am not capable of doing anything.” It is even harder when you hear these lies about yourself and believe they are true. Living life with challenges and struggles makes it even more difficult to think positive thoughts and believe anything is possible. How many times have you been through self-struggles or listened to the lies from others? How have you handled it and grown from it? Today I encourage you to let today be the first day to believe in yourself, that you can anything you put your mind to. If you do believe in yourself, I encourage you to do something you never thought you were capable of doing. Take each day and think as positively as you can. Please feel free to share stories of accomplishments you have achieved.
